Steelscape Takes A Grassroots Approach To Zero Waste
Think Globally, Act Locally
In June of 2018, employees of the Kalama Steelscape facility took it upon themselves to start a Waste Reduction Committee with the goal of Zero Waste. With the mind set of, “Think globally, act locally”, everyone identified an issue with the facility management of the waste streams. No one had all the answers to solve each of the problems by themselves. So, a group formed with just a few people to start, then gained new members with every meeting. With a few brainstorm sessions, members provided ideas on impactful changes Steelscape could make immediately. The first major focus was “Steelscape puts the waste in the right place!” New bins were added to along with the already common bins (plastic bottles/aluminum/paper). The new, larger bins hold the plastic film, plastic banding, metal, cardboard, and wood.
With a focus on the new Manufacturing Excellence program in Kalama, departmental teams have taken notice of the large-scale changes. Each department is taking on the goal of waste reduction and sorting projects this year. The Committee’s goal for the Kalama facility is to become a Zero Waste facility one day.
